The medical literature has provided evidence that longer the workers stay away from work the more likely they are to be permanently disabled. It is reported that probability of ever returning to work is only 50% by the time claimants has been off work for 90 days. It is only 2% by the time claimants are off work for 12 months. The medical evidence has shown that use of traditional medical model and physicians who are not trained in disability prevention and management are important causes of delayed recovery in these claims. It is critical for the outcome of these claims that the physicians who are formally trained in disability prevention and management are engaged at an early stage in order to achieve fast recovery and early return to work.
